Functions and Effects:

Flg22 is a highly conserved 22-amino acid peptide fragment located at the N-terminus of bacterial flagellin, and it can be directly recognized by FLS2, a pattern-recognition receptor on plant cell membranes. Flg22 induces FLS2 to form heterodimerization with its co-receptor BAK1, thereby activating downstream defense signaling pathways. This leads to a cascade of physiological and biochemical responses within plant cells, including the burst of reactive oxygen species, modulation of ion channels, activation of mitogen-activated protein kinase cascades, and upregulation of defense-related gene expression—ultimately enhancing the plant's resistance against pathogenic microbes.
